Where is Moglander? 9 March 2012

Hi Folks, we’re almost as south in Morocco as we plan to go. There is simply too much wind to be able to enjoy the outdoors, so we will soon head back North. Probably 🙂

The Enduro – Bikes at last!

I’ve been a bit of a closet biker for quite a few years. I went through all the right motions when I was a kid, managing to get my first bike before I was 16, and having a trail of dirt bikes of one kind or another until I discovered that going round a track in a 4×4 did’nt hurt as much, and meant you did’nt get as wet. Usually.  I still hanker after bikes, and all the bits that go with them. I’m currently reading Sam Manicom‘s “Into Africa”, which I can recommend! and I’m getting the itch again.

It’s like the circus came to town!

And then, like a big sharp bush to scratch myself on we discovered that an Enduro event was passing through the place we were staying! We had a few things to sort out, but made sure we got to take a look about. It brought back memories of competing in the TORC events in Ireland, with my buddy Howie riding shotgun (Actually, I think he used to let me tag along provided I did’nt slow him down too much, but that’s a story that needs a few beers..).  The event here in Morocco was run very similarly to how I remember them. These photos just give a sense of the event, which was the “Enduro D’Agadir

Rear tyre spinning, bike leaning, foot forward, front tyre light. Love it!

The event involved riding between 180 and 280km per day, off road.  In the Mog on the heavy pistes, we were doing between 15 and 40km per day! These guys hauled, and knew how to create dust! There were some really great riders in this event, and they made it look easy!

In the Gallery, there are some behind the scenes shots, and some action stuff. Where the riders are in the taped area, this is one of the special tests.

The Shipwreck.

Shipwreck standing proud

Morocco’s coast has a fair few shipwrecks, but not many more photographed than this one at N 29 16.787 W010 15.406. We drove here from Sidi Ifni, leaving the town by the road out past the port, but sneaking our way down to the beach to drive along to find the shipwreck. We drove past some fishermen’s huts, and a smaller wreck that had broken in two.

As we got up along the beach, we pulled up beside the ship, and it must have been the only time of the day when there were no other tourists there.

The mog looks small beside this ship

I had hoped to get a shot of the ship in the evening light when it lit up the side of the ship, but someone else had the idea to park their car beside the ship, and sit there for the rest of the day having a picnic.

This is the view from inside the ship.

View from in the ship

We spent longer looking for firewood than we did driving from one camp to the next! Anyway, this is where we got to today. It made a good overnight spot, and we shared it with 3 other vehicles. It was too windy to make a fire, but it’s still a nice place.

And I guess for the petrol heads, you might want to see the video  how we got here…

There were loads of little shorebirds feeding along the beach. They were so busy they did’nt seem to mind me getting close enough to take a few shots. That suited me fine!

You looking at us? Feeling Lucky? Well, do ya punk?

These little guys had Character! They sort of ran along the sand, just where the waves finished. The Snowy Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus nivosus) is a small shorebird distinguished from other plovers (family Charadriidae) by its small size, pale brown upper parts, dark patches on either side of the upper breast, and dark gray to blackish legs. (all credit to where ever allie found this out!)

Dinner time!

Anyone for the Blue’s?

Sarah chances a big climb, Click the picture to see her

Or maybe some rock and roll? just a few Km outside of Tafaroute, the painted blue rocks of Belgian artist Jean Veran can be seen. These are pretty big, so we put the mog in a few photos to show the size of them. I had thought they would have faded over the years, but they are lasting well!

I'm convinced these rocks move, and try to hide!

This one looked like a face...

The rocks were very like the rock we saw in Moab, Utah years ago.

Peek a boo!

close big, small far away. Any Ted fans?

Arches on the Beach. Can you spot Sarah gone for a walk?

We stayed by a nice beach at Legzira last night, there was just room for about 4 campers at the beach, and we got one of the spots. It’s famous for it’s arches along the beach, and this morning we got a few photos before getting some freshly squeezed orange juice, served right on the beach. Some of the really cool rocks at the end of the beach made for great sprays of sea water.

There she blows!

Where is Moglander? 27 Feb 2012.

We are in a Town called Tiznit, and will probably move on tomorrow towards the coast. Tiznt is a nice enough town, with a walled medina we plan to explore in the morning they also have the first supermarket with shopping trolley’s that we have seen since we left Spain.
