M’hamid to Foum Zguid – Full details of the track we took.

So, If your wondering what an off road piste is like in Morocco, zoom in on this map and you’ll see our wanderings. You’ll also see 2 u-turns, one was a detour we did to see a dried up lake bed, and another was because one track was so bumpy we could only travel in 3rd gear at tickover, which in a mog is about 4kph!

This post is a bit of an experiment, we might try to do a few more like it if this works!

[google-map-v3 width=”800″ height=”625″ zoom=”5″ maptype=”HYBRID” mapalign=”center” latitude=”0″ longitude=”0″ kml=”http://moglander.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/mogtest1.kml” showmarker=”false” animation=”DROP” maptypecontrol=”true” pancontrol=”true” zoomcontrol=”true” scalecontrol=”true” streetviewcontrol=”true” bubbleautopan=”false” showbike=”false” showtraffic=”false” showpanoramio=”false”]

Zoom in on the map, pan around, get a feel for it. The trail was about 160KM long, and we took 3 days to do it. We camped by pulling off the piste to somewhere quiet the first night, but the 2nd night we just parked one vehicle width off the track as we only met 2 other vehicles the whole 3 days! 2 of the quietest nights sleep our whole trip!

For anyone else doing this, we think we stayed too far north, we’ve since heard there is a more southerly route that is much smoother so you can travel quicker.

UPDATE: To see what the actual track looked like:

Where is Moglander? 14 Feb 2012

Well, we are back from the middle of nowhere! we had a few great days in the desert, but we’re back to big town to sort our selves out, and get some online stuff done.  The town we are in is often used (with the surrounding areas) for movies, so we’ll have to see how many scenes we recognise!

A tip from Alan, Zagora’s semi resident photographer

We chose to camp in “Camping Oasis Palmier” in Zagora for our last nights with Claire and Robin before they headed for home. We made sure to have a proper Sunday dinner with them in moglander, Roast beef, Carrots, Spuds – the works! Just the way to finish up our amazing time with Froggie and his crew (sorry – in-joke).

Sunday Lunch

We had a real lazy day, after all it was Sunday, had coffee , followed by more coffee and breakfast outside our trucks with the sun beaming down on us, cool in the shade, so we kept moving the table and  following the sun. The biggest event of the day was walking into the town in the afternoon for a moroccain salad, late lunch, or early starter before our roast!

then, after they left we got a tip about a location, GPS co-ordinates only,   from a photographer called Alan, who was parked beside us in our campsite, drives a landrover 90, so had to be good, and off we went, and this is what we saw on our trip

Moroccan People

Moroccan people typically don’t like their photos being taken. It’s hard to believe as they have been very friendly to us, and we’ve had no hastle at all. Sure many folks want to sell us stuff, or bring us on tours, to carpet shops, to camp sites, but it’s all pretty good natured. Anyway, These are folks we’ve met.

As usual, keep an eye for Stuarts hat….

The pool table really is the ultimate way to meet strangers, after a couple of games of pool, we were invited back to the house by the kids mum. It was getting late, and we had a lot of KM’s to cover, so we passed.

Where is Moglander? 5 Feb 2012

After a few busy days, we’ve on a day off (i.e. no driving). Catching up on a few chores. We arrived into zagora yesterday,

[google-map-v3 width=”350″ height=”350″ zoom=”6″ maptype=”ROADMAP” mapalign=”center” latitude=”0″ longitude=”0″ addresscontent=”zagora, morocco” showmarker=”true” animation=”DROP” maptypecontrol=”true” pancontrol=”true” zoomcontrol=”true” scalecontrol=”true” streetviewcontrol=”true” bubbleautopan=”false” showbike=”false” showtraffic=”false” showpanoramio=”false”]

Zagora is on the map from the Paris Dakar race days, and THE local guy is Mohamed Gordito. We decided to call by, and treat the mog to an oil change, and Robin decided to have the Toyota washed. This is his site: http://mohamedgordito.com/default.html  Air filters blown clean, oils done, we’re on the way again!

This is what his place looks like:

Where is Moglander 3 Feb 2012

Hi,

Sorry we’ve not made it on line much recently. We bought a maroc telecom usb stick/modem, and it’s touch and go as to where it works. It may be something to do with us keeping off the beaten path!

All is going well, and we plan to drive some of the old Paris-Dakar over the next few days.

Hope to do a decent update soon.
